Small Axe

Los Angeles, CA. 2020

When Steve McQueen, the Academy Award-winning film director of "Twelve Years a Slave," partnered with Amazon Studios for a film series focusing on true stories from the civil rights movement in the UK spanning the 1960s to the 1990s, there was a need for a live component to engage the audience. Given the significance of the topics, we faced the additional challenge of ensuring the event adhered to COVID-19 compliance and was entirely contactless.
To celebrate the launch of "Small Axe," we recreated the streets of retro West Indian London in Inglewood, CA. Transforming the Crenshaw Dairy Mart into a drive-thru experience, we immersed guests in reggae sounds and unique Caribbean flavors. Attendees were able to take home curated Caribbean meal kits by Nyesha Joyce and their own copy of the custom Small Axe zine, featuring contributions from notable Black writers, designers, recipes, and playlists.
